Got Your Back San Diego is a weekend nutrition program for kids in North County public schools who have been identified as homeless or food insecure. Each week, backpacks full of food are delivered and each backpack contains 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and a few healthy snacks, enough food to sustain a child throughout the weekend. On Friday afternoons, school representatives distribute the full backpacks to children. These children take part in lunch programs at their schools throughout the week. For most of them, the school cafeteria is their primary source of nutrition and many of them spend the weekend with little to no food.
Backpacks are not filled over the summer, however, they will take donations all year in order to purchase food. This is always a GREAT need. The project runs September through May.
